TEA HOUSE

Pavilion

Finalist / Antepavilion

Regent’s Canal, UK, 2020

Tea House is a pavilion designed for the Antepavilion architecture event organised on Regent’s Canal in London. The proposal was selected among the 2020 finalists. Tea House floats detached from the mainland. The pontoon layout uses modular 1:2 ratio NATO pontoons which is the same ratio of the traditional tea room tatami mat, fundamental to tea drinking in Japan. The central pool of water formed by the pontoon layout creates a fluid circulation around the pavilion and motivates its introspective nature. When raining, water falls from the roof opening to the pool area starting a contemplative scene to be appreciated while lounging on the recycled chip foam seat. Curtains of thin chains dangling from the gutters appear as light ornamental fabric and carry down the drops of rain from the roof to the canal.
